Who We Are
Our Philosophy | Billings Faculty & Staff

For five generations, the Billings family has been a dynasty in the dance business. Starting in Europe and moving to the U.S. the Christensens (cousins of Richard Billings) founded San Francisco Ballet and Ballet West in Utah. Mr. & Mrs. Richard Billings founded “Billings School of Dance” in Portland in 1932. They enjoyed enormous success operating in the boom years of ballroom dancing (300-600 students per night) and when dance was the main activity for little girls (before soccer and other sports). After many years and hundreds of thousands of students, in 1972 the Senior Billings passed the business on to their son and daughter in law, Dick and Mary Louise Billings. Mary Louise’s sister and brother in law, Pat and Bob Heath, would later join the operation as co-owners.
In 1978,the business, then known as Billings Dance and Performing Arts Center, moved from its Cedar Hills location to 12570 SW Farmington Road in Beaverton. Anita Pienovi originally built the building in the 1950’s for her school of ballet.
From 1978 to 1992, Billings Dance and Performing Arts Center taught 500,000 classes to 12,000 different people, often seeing over 1,000 students per week. In addition to the regular classes of Tap, Jazz, Ballet, Pointe, Musical Comedy and Gymnastics, special courses were also offered in Acting, Vocal, Modeling and Commercial Workshops. Hundreds of youngsters were lucky enough to attend Billings Dance Center's “StarMakers" Performing Arts Camps that were offered each summer. A remarkable number of students went on to become professional dancers. The Billings still visit them in Las Vegas, Reno, and Los Angeles. It also seems that most of the people teaching dance in the metro area are former Billings students. Many people have wonderful memories of their time spent at the studio. The Billings hear from past students often and are very gratified that they were able to provide such a positive experience and lasting memories for them.

Our Philosophy
Teaching self-esteem and self-discipline through dance and other performing arts is what the Billings family has been doing since 1932, when the school was founded by Mr. & Mrs. Richard Billings.
Our success in presenting our program to hundreds of thousands of students over the years is based on a structured, proven curriculum and professional teachers who care about your child’s growth as a dancer and as a person.
Our goal is to present an exciting, up to date program that will instill our students with a love for the performing arts. All material will be ability and age appropriate and family oriented.
Students in all classes will have fun while learning. Classes will be taught in an atmosphere where mutual respect and good manners go hand in hand.
Whether in Tap, Jazz, Ballroom, or any other class, our students are encouraged and applauded for their progress and challenged to be the best they can be!
Meet the Billings Faculty and Staff…
Please note that we have no teenagers or student teachers on our staff. All of our instructors are Dance Professionals and our fully accredited staff instructs all classes, from 4-year-old pre-Tap or Ballet to advanced level classes. We think all levels and all age groups deserve the best and we know our exceptional staff can deliver the best training possible!
Mary Louise Billings is a Tap specialist who has studied with many of the top Master Tap instructors and performers of our time. Of course her primary influence was that of her Father-in-law, Richard Billings. Having studied Rhythm Tap and Irish Step dancing as a youngster, Mary Louise fell in love with the choreography-rich style of Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor. Through this medium, Mary Louise loves the diversity of choreography inspired by a wide range of music possible in this genre. In her comprehensive Tap curriculum, young tappers can move through the program experiencing a wide range of steps and combinations whether in waltz clog, soft shoe, Irish, rhythm, buck and wing or theatrical style.

Jayne Calmer, our Gymnastic coach, has an amazing background in the sport of Gymnastics. Jayne was on her way to the Olympics when knee injuries unfortunately put her on the sidelines. She went on to have a very impressive college career and has done an excellent job of motivating and instructing our dancers to be the best gymnasts they can be. Jayne is very conscientious and all of her students respect her.

Besides being a songwriter and performer himself, Ray Beran is also our Vocal Coach. Ray has been with us for several years and does a great job of teaching music theory and voice. His group vocal classes are fun and his performance choirs do a great job at our Holiday Show, Recital and Competition. Ray works hard to help our dancers become the dreaded triple threat, dancer, actor and singer! |

Still another alumni of Billings, Jen Church, teaches Beginning Teen/Adult Jazz. Jen is in great shape and loves to start new dancers out on a path toward flexibility and strength. Jen’s students are always so impressed with her perfect stretch they want to know her secrets. It would be hard to find a nicer and more conscientious teacher than Jen.

Dick Billings works closely with Carrie, managing the business and schmoozing with all of you in the lobby! Dick knows all of the students and they all seem to think he is their “Grandpa”. We all love to tease Dick about his exact “job description”, but he has been around this crazy Dance Business all of his life and his instincts are always right on. You may notice that he disappears for several months each year. Dick is a Licensed Tax Consultant and is very busy January through April.

Diane Pixton (Michelle Billings’ Mom) works in the office. Diane is very creative and is full of ideas. She has been around this business for years and we know she will be of great help to you all.
